The Granny Smith, also know as green apple or sour apple, originated in Australia in 1868. It was discovered by Maria Ann Smith, who found a seedling growing in her garden. The apple is believed to be a hybrid of a European wild apple (Malus sylvestris) and the domesticated apple (Malus domestica) as the pollenizer. Maria Ann Smith nurtured this seedling, and it eventually became popular for its unique tart flavor and excellent storage properties.
Harvesting and Storage: Granny Smith apples are usually harvested from late September to early November, depending on the region and climate conditions. To ensure they remain fresh and retain their distinctive tartness and crunch, we store our Granny Smith apples in Controlled Atmosphere (CA) storage facilities. This advanced storage method helps maintain their quality, allowing consumers to enjoy crisp, tangy Granny Smith apples long after the harvest season.
